If immersing yourself in nature and appreciating the beauty of trees is your kind of recreation, Japan has some incredible autumn leaf viewing spots that you shouldn’t miss.
Why Japan in the Autumn?
Japan stands out as a premier tourist destination for many reasons: efficient transportation, a high level of safety, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes all cater to travelers. With four distinct seasons, autumn offers a perfect backdrop for experiencing trees adorned in vibrant colors. Plus, it’s only about a four-hour flight from Manila, making it easily accessible.
While there are countless locations to witness the stunning fall foliage across Japan, here are our top five recommendations:
1. Lake Kawaguchi
Lake Kawaguchi is one of the iconic Five Lakes of Mt. Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its stunning vistas. This area offers various attractions, including hot springs, a library, a museum, and a botanical garden. For just JPY 1200, you can hop on a retro-style sightseeing bus to explore these sites.
The lake provides postcard-perfect views of Mt. Fuji framed by the brilliant autumn colors. To catch the best views, don’t miss these three spots:
Maple Corridor, a breathtaking 150-meter tunnel of maple trees with Mt. Fuji as a backdrop
Kachi-Kachi Ropeway
Saiko Iyashino-Sato Nenba (Healing Village), a charming thatched roof village
Arriving at Kawaguchiko Station around lunchtime is ideal. If you’re coming from Shinjuku, catch the 8:30 AM tourist bus, which takes about 90 minutes and is budget-friendly. Set your alarm early to dive right into your adventure!

2. Kumoba Pond
For an early “koyo” (autumn colors) experience, head to Nagano and visit Karuizawa, where fall foliage peaks earlier due to its high altitude. Kumoba Pond is particularly stunning at the end of October to early November with its vibrant Larch and Maple trees.
Kumoba Pond is just a short walk from Karuizawa Station, making it an accessible trail. Don’t forget to enjoy the breathtaking views of trees dressed in vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, all under a cool breeze. October 2nd to November 3rd marks an autumn festival period, during which hotels and museums offer great discounts. You can catch the JR Nagano Shinkansen from Tokyo, which takes around 70 minutes.

3. Shiretoko National Park
For those craving a more rugged autumn adventure, Shiretoko in Hokkaido is a must-visit. As Japan’s northernmost national park and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, it offers diverse wildlife encounters alongside spectacular fall colors.
Catch the “Momiji Kappa Bus” to explore the beautiful Jozankei Gorge or venture to Kushiro Shitsugen, Japan’s largest marshland. Mid-October is the best time to witness this breathtaking seasonal transformation.
Though I missed visiting Shiretoko on my last trip, it’s on my list for my next adventure when I hope to see the captivating brown and black bears.
4. Kyoto
Kyoto is an evergreen favorite among travelers, and it comes alive with autumn beauty. Its historical temples and shrines become even more enchanting as they contrast against the brilliant hues of fall.
At Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, you’ll find absolutely stunning foliage. Another iconic location is Arashiyama, famous for its serene bamboo forest, groves, monkey park, and picturesque water vistas. Easily accessible from central Kyoto, it’s a must for any visitor.

5. Kanagawa
Kamakura, easily reachable from Tokyo, is another exciting spot to catch autumn colors. Visit the Great Buddha, or Daibutsu, at Kotoku-in Temple. This bronze statue stands strong despite surviving a 15th-century tsunami.
Sengokuhara in Hakone is another gem during autumn with its expansive fields of Pampas grass. Here, you can revel in the soothing beauty of nature, surrounded by invigorating botanical gardens. The sight of Susuki (Japanese Pampas grass) swaying in the breeze is a nostalgic reminder of the season.
Japan shines as a spectacular travel destination year-round, but for breathtaking fall foliage, delectable seasonal produce (try the melons and baked pumpkins!), and cozy autumn outfits, there’s no better time than now.
My autumn experience in Hokkaido remains one of my fondest memories, reminiscent of watching the Talisay tree in my hometown transition from yellow to vibrant red.
