If you’re considering training in Muay Thai, you may want to check out Studio32 located in Banilad Town Center, Cebu. I recently attended a session and wanted to share my experience, along with some key insights and recommendations for both beginners and seasoned practitioners.

How to Join a Class

To find out about the available classes for the day, visit their website, where you’ll find all the links, contact information, and location details. (I shared all the info at the bottom part of this article.)

If you’re walking in: Upon entering the studio, head to the reception desk on the right and let them know you want to join a kickboxing class. The staff will ask if you are a member (meaning if you have classes at Baseline or if you’ve previously participated in a class and are on their records). If you are a member, simply provide your details and pay the fee of 600 pesos.

If you’ve booked online: Just inform the staff that you have a booking and provide your details, then pay the 600 pesos.

If you have an unlimited class pass: Let the staff know that you have an unlimited class pass.

Once your payment is settled, please place your shoes in the shoe holder and store your bags underneath the seating bench. While waiting for the class to start, remember to put on your hand wraps.

When it’s time, the coach will signal for the class to begin. Enjoy your training!

The Class Structure

At Studio32, each class is precisely one hour long, and the drop-in fee is 600 pesos for kickboxing. The classes are structured to ensure that participants get the most out of their time. Here’s a breakdown of how a typical session unfolds:

  1. Warm-Up (15 minutes):
The class kicks off with 5 minutes of light jogging followed by shadow boxing to get the body warmed up. This is followed by a series of dynamic warm-up exercises such as jumping squats, burpees, footwork drills, push-ups, and planks.
  2. Technique Training (20 minutes):
Next, the focus shifts to group technique training. Under the watchful eye of the coaches, students practice their combos in front of a large mirror. This not only aids in refining techniques but also helps beginners learn the essential movements. While it can be a bit challenging to remember longer combos, with practice, they become second nature.
  3. Pad Work and Heavy Bag Training (20 minutes):
After the technique practice, students engage in rotating rounds of pad work and heavy bag training. The heavy bag sessions allow for freestyle practices unless there’s a specific routine set for the day.
  4. Sparring (optional):
Depending on coach availability and class size, participants might have the chance to spar for 2-3 rounds, provided they bring their own gear.
  5. Cool Down (5 minutes):
Each session wraps up with a cool-down period to stretch and recover.

Pros of Training at Studio32

  • Clean and Bright Environment: The facility is new and well-maintained, creating a motivating atmosphere for training.
  • Professional Coaches: The coaches are not only skilled but also attentive, providing valuable guidance and encouraging students to improve their skills.
  • Supportive Community: The coaching staff makes a concerted effort to help beginners feel welcomed and confident in their abilities.
  • Variety of Classes: With multiple classes available throughout the day—both in the morning and evening—it’s easy to fit training into your schedule. I particularly love the 6 AM classes here. They also offer attractive pricing for unlimited monthly or yearly passes.
  • Convenient Location: Situated in Banilad Town Center, the gym offers easy access to a range of food and drink options after your workout.
  • Modern Equipment: All training equipment is new, and the large mirror in the gym is ideal for monitoring your form and technique.
  • Shower Facilities: A convenient shower area is available inside the studio, with restrooms just outside near the stairs.
  • Multiple Locations: One in Banilad Town Center and another at Baseline in Robinsons Baseline along Osmeña Road. Enrolled students at Baseline can also easily join classes at the Banilad branch – just add 300 pesos for a class. Check out their branch at Baseline for more options!

Cons to Consider

  • Time Constraint: Sessions are strictly one hour long, which might feel rushed compared to other gyms where you can hang out longer.
  • Less Sparring Opportunity: Unlike some other gyms like Muay Thai Cebu, there isn’t as much focus on sparring with fellow students.
  • Pricing: The drop-in fee can be relatively costlier compared to some alternatives in the area.
  • Shorter Pad Work Sessions: While still effective, the duration of pad work can feel a bit rushed at times.

Recommendations

I highly recommend Studio32 for both beginners and experienced fighters.

The environment is especially ideal for newcomers looking to gain confidence and skills. For those with more experience, it can serve as a great place to refine techniques, albeit with the consideration of integrating training from other gyms, like Muay Thai Cebu, for more extensive sparring practice and access to gym equipment. This is my strategy 🙂 I like the idea that I can learn and improve more integrating techniques by different coaches.

In conclusion, my experience at Studio32 was positive, and I intend to continue training there while supplementing my sessions at Muay Thai Cebu for a balanced approach. If you’re looking to dive into the world of Muay Thai, give Studio32 a try—you won’t be disappointed!
