My 3 days and 2 nights stay at La Carmela de Boracay was far better than I expected.

scene in the beachfront

To tell the truth, I anticipated the worst from this beachfront hotel mainly because of overwhelming mediocre to poor reviews online. Dismayed travelers claim that the rooms are old and poorly maintained, staff are unaccommodating and food aren’t nice.

Well, I must say there’s nothing particularly outstanding about the hotel amenities/facilities, the food or the rooms where I and my friends stayed at. In fact, the air conditioner and television were pretty outmoded and the bathroom lacked some toiletries. Still I gave this hotel 10/10 rating at Tripadvisor as soon as I got back to Manila.

Why?

La Carmela de Boracay provided me an ideal hotel stay by the beach by pacifying my significant concerns:

1. Good value for money

I spent most of my time outdoors. I remembered going back to the hotel around 2 in the morning and waking the next day for breakfast without any thought of lingering inside the room.

The free breakfast was okay. Toasts, meat, eggs, juice, coffee…  though their meals were not superb, still it offered the benefit of filling in my stomach before I indulged myself into the day’s activity. It’s not like my normal stay at a hotel with my boyfriend so the affordable room rate (i.e. PHP 2,200 for a standard room on the main building) and the simple free breakfast worked well for me.

Ole White Beach!

2. Excellent Location

I tried to get more out of Boracay, took loads of photos and walked as far as I could. The hotel’s location was perfect—a few meters away from the white sand beach and a 5-minute tricycle ride to the back beach, it’s close to Talipapa and D’mall and to our Church!

3. Quality Hotel Facilities

The hotel has 2 swimming pools, ample washrooms and shower rooms, separate dining hall for guests, waiting lounge and lobby perfect for picture-taking, stylish alleys and landscape, cafeteria and restaurant with free internet connection. Though there’s no free wi-fi in our room, I enjoyed fast free wi-fi at the hotel restaurant (and even free coffee). I was able to recharge my laptop/ iphone from power outlets peeping from the wall behind our tables.

      4. Well-equipped room

We booked 2 standard rooms which consist of two double beds per room.

The room where we stayed in was cozy. The beds were clean and comfortable with 2 soft pillows and warm thick blankets. The bathroom was clean. Hot shower was available. There was a mini-fridge inside the room as well as an outmoded AC and cable TV. There was a small balcony where which we hung our wet clothes. There’s no hair dryer but since I requested for it, they provided us free of charge!

5. High customer service

I was stunned the moment we stepped out of Southwest service van. We were greeted cheerfully by the hotel’s security guards and the staff welcomed us with complimentary Raspberry drinks. Kudos to “Bogs Bunny”, Roxanne, the front desk officer and waiters during our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. They attended to all our needs and requests—drinking water, hot water, hair dryer, utensils, condiments, directions—kindly and enthusiastically.

Travel Tips

  • List the things you need to bring ahead so you’d have enough time to remember everything.
  • Bring medicine especially mefenamic acid and antibiotic.
  • Bring snacks to munch on at night. I learned that they sell the 17-peso Nissin instant noodle for 43 pesos.
  • Research from some online blog reviews where to stay, to eat, what to do to save time and energy.
  • Know the acceptable rates for your outdoor activities so you won’t be taken advantage of nor be unfair toward the local business operators.
  • Bring necessary toiletries (i.e. toothbrush and toothpaste).
  • Bring an extension wire if 2 power outlets aren’t enough for you.
  • Find beauty in all situations. Smile. Be grateful. Enjoy every moment of your awesome vacation!
